We collected a total of 206 Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks by flagging in pastures in Yonaguni Island, Okinawa, Japan, in April 2008. Four of the 206 tick DNA samples tested were positive in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening for the 16SrRNA gene of Anaplasmataceae. Partial sequences of 4 PCR products were identical to each other. Longer sequences of the 16SrRNA gene were successfully determined in 2 of the 4 tick samples, and the obtained 1,392 bp and 1,300 bp sequences revealed high similarity to the 16SrRNA gene sequences of the validated Ehrlichia species, including Ehrlichia ewingii, E. chaffeensis, and E. canis (98.3–98.6%). We also sequenced 1,304 bp of the groEL gene from the 2 tick samples, and found that these had the highest similarity... |

Hemoparasitosis, diseases that may cause clinical and hematological complications, are considered a great challenge to practitioners and clinical pathologists. Its high incidence in all Brazilian territory and the difficulty for a precise diagnosis can lead in most cases to a therapeutic diagnosis. Anaplasma platys, Babesia canis vogeli, Ehrlichia canis, Mycoplasma haemocanis and with a lower frequency and clinical relevance, Anaplasma phagocytophilum are the main etiological agents affecting dogs in Brazil. The climatic conditions found in several Brazilian areas, such as high rain and temperature levels, favor the arthropods vectors life cycles. This subject became an important challenge to both veterinarians and pet owners. These etiological agents... |

ABSTRACT Ehrlichia infections in cattle are frequent in Africa but have also been reported in Brazil and North America. This paper reports natural infection by Ehrlichia sp. associated with Babesia bigemina and Anaplasma marginale in a calf in the municipality of Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, presenting polioencephalomalacia. The molecular evidence, based on a fragment of the dsb gene, indicates a species of Ehrlichia genetically related to Ehrlichia canis and other species of the genus found in the tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and a calf from Brazil (99 to 100% identity). It was not possible to associate the clinical signs with Ehrlichia infection due to co-infections and histological evidence of another disease. However,... |
